I love places like this, but I wish they were better preserved because one day they will simply disappear and take all their history with them. It's a shame that it's all bricked up too - even though it would be pretty spooky to walk inside, but imagine how interesting it would be?! Anyway, I wanted to comment because I've not been in the area for long and I came across this post while looking for filming locations for my friend's music project. This looks like a really good place and it's not far from our Birmingham apartment as it happens! So I wanted to thank you and say carry on writing. This was a great help :) Layla xAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-74212704517476650202012-09-30T21:21:23.555+01:002012-09-30T21:21:23.555+01:00It is so extraordinary to look at, with such a str...It is so extraordinary to look at, with such a strange story, it really grips the imagination.Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-63024315976828245102012-09-30T21:12:45.905+01:002012-09-30T21:12:45.905+01:00It makes you think, doesn't it...It makes you think, doesn't it...Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-53439014869130500392012-09-30T17:25:32.064+01:002012-09-30T17:25:32.064+01:00What interesting history! Apparently the church they were transferred from had its own catacombs, so perhaps they were quite common, but it's not something I've encountered before. Presumably, as well as saving space, the Catacombs must have been cheaper as well - like the unmarked graves for paupers perhaps.Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-29611058298316314912012-09-30T08:25:41.068+01:002012-09-30T08:25:41.068+01:00There is a group of of volunteers who do maintenan...There is a group of of volunteers who do maintenance, and they have logged the graves and monuments at Key Hill, but I'm not sure how much research has been done at this site in Warstone Road. At one point I believe they were part of some kind of ghost tour, but again, I'm not sure if this is still done, or how often, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of information in them in the publicity leaflets produced by Birmingham City Council.Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-52644337681082147912012-09-30T08:20:29.003+01:002012-09-30T08:20:29.003+01:00Diane, I was knocked out by the Catacombs and the ...Diane, I was knocked out by the Catacombs and the history of the site. People think it's all modern, and industries, but it's not - apart from the catacombs there are incredible canals, a Georgian church with all its box pews (the Jewellery Quarter again), two cathedrals (one, designed by Pugin, is the most ornate building inside I've ever seen), and a museum and art gallery with an amazing pre-Raphaelite collection... and lots of other stuff as well!Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-76704348383884058122012-09-30T08:10:36.827+01:002012-09-30T08:10:36.827+01:00It is definitely macabre Alex - graveyards/burials...It is definitely macabre Alex - graveyards/burials obviously have a history all of their own.Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-3301196347681069462012-09-30T08:09:06.172+01:002012-09-30T08:09:06.172+01:00Since I got made redundant I've had time to ex...Since I got made redundant I've had time to explore locally, and I'm really enjoying it - especially the places like this, which are free and easily accessible!Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-28913017186627789962012-09-30T06:11:55.004+01:002012-09-30T06:11:55.004+01:00I can not imagine moving 600 formerly buried bodie...I can not imagine moving 600 formerly buried bodies and at night.
Interesting history.
