It's about people and relationships, but doesn't try to explain their motives - it just presents them as they are.Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-13729513721826250112012-06-22T19:01:10.183+01:002012-06-22T19:01:10.183+01:00I hadn't heard that Johnson quote before, but ...I hadn't heard that Johnson quote before, but I sure wish more would obey it. As wonderful as your review is, I just don't like historical novels peopled with real personalities. I'm quite in the minority because I see the popularity of such books as The Paris Wife. But I'd always rather read a biography, even though it may not be the whole truth either! <br />And I even break my own rule occasionally. :<)Nanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15547916206007733970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-40624324565283157882012-06-21T17:42:22.434+01:002012-06-21T17:42:22.434+01:00Thank you Harriet. I'll check out the link - and I loved Robbie Coltrane as Johnson (sometimes all the Johnson stuff was way too much for me handle, and I used to go home and watch a video of the series, just to reassure myself that great literary figures shouldn't be taken too seriously!)Christine Hardinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09814026435889782750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-61268545555788505032012-06-21T17:08:20.222+01:002012-06-21T17:08:20.222+01:00A wonderful and knowledgeable review. When I get round to reading this one, as I will, I come from a perspective of not knowing much about Johnson at all (apart from his portrayal in Blackadder III!). It sounds like I will enjoy the book immensely though. On my post yesterday there was a link to a clip of Bainbridge talking about Johnson's autopsy by the way.Annabel (gaskella)http://gaskella.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4512516523018627966.post-25277636086591568692012-06-21T16:41:45.821+01:002012-06-21T16:41:45.821+01:00This is such an excellent review! I read this one ...This is such an excellent review! I read this one too, and my review is popping up tomorrow I think. But it's not half as good as yours. In fact this was my least favorite of the five BBs I have now read, but of course is still a brilliant novel. Do try some more of her work.harriethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04470091985662379182noreply@blogger.com
